February 20, 2010; the morning started off rather cool, but by mid afternoon with the sun shining down the air temperature had reached into the mid 50’s. That was a good thing, since the ocean temperature was in the low 40’s and I was about to jump in, burr.
It was time for me to take “The Polar Plunge” for a third year in a row. The plunge has been held for the past six years to benefit Special Olympics in New Hanover County. 100% of the funds raised go to support the sports program for over 600 Special Olympic Athletes in New Hanover. The athletes receive training in: Athletics, Basketball, Softball, Bowling, Bocce, Golf, Power Lifting, Roller Skating, Soccer, Swimming and Tennis.
This year about 330 “plungers” along Special Olympians braved the cold Atlantic waters and went for a “swim”.
My time in the water was brief, 47 degree water does not inspire one to linger. Once out of the water my focus was on my husband who was holding my towel and warm clothes.
This is a great cause and one that I truly believe in. If you can’t join me next year as a “plunger” please find someone who is taking the plunge and support them. New Hanover County Polar Plunge website: www.plungenhc.com
