The Porters were one of the area’s most prominent families. This European family settled the northeast corner of New Hanover County in the early 1700’s. It was a rice plantation that soon had other crops growing, similar to other plantations in the Cape Fear area. The original plantation house doesn’t exist any longer, but some of the plantation holdings remain in the family.
From the Porters and the geographic term, neck, which describes a narrow stretch of land or an isthmus connecting two other land masses, we get the area now known as Porters Neck. While it doesn’t connect to anything today, it sits between Pages Creek, Futch Creek, and the Intracoastal Waterway.
Porters Neck is one of the fastest-growing areas of the region and has several large subdivisions sprouting amid the forests and fields that still exist in the area. That includes the Porters Neck Plantation golf course community.
Porters Neck Plantation is located in the northeast section of Wilmington just south of Ogden and Hampstead. Sitting on 650+ acres of beautiful coastal land adjacent to the Intracoastal Waterway are beautiful homes and a championship golf course.
In addition to the fine custom homes and homesites with deeded water rights and a community dock, one can join the outstanding Country Club, home to the 18 hole, par 72 golf course designed by Tom Fazio. It was ranked number 1 on the North cArolina Coast by Golf Digest and number 19 in the state and is the official site of the first round of the 1997 PGA Tour Qualifying School.
The Sports Complex includes a junior Olympic-size recreation pool and lap pool, clay tennis courts, an aerobics studio, and a fitness center with Cybex exercise equipment. The 15,000 square foot Clubhouse has a Dining Room, Members Lounge and Grille Room, in addition to banquet facilities.
Porters Neck is becoming a bustling commercial area serving residents of coastal New Hanover and Pender counties, a development that’s hastened with the opening of the U.S. 17 Wilmington Bypass.
