Wilmington, NC is the home of the Azalea Festival

The 2009 holiday season is behind us, and the 2010 beach season is still quite a bit away. What better time than now to start looking forward to the annual Azalea Festival.

The festival is run by a non-profit civic organization that depends each year on an army of volunteers that donates time and effort to put on a celebration that attracts over 300,000 visitors to historic downtown Wilmington.

Started in 1948, this year’s festival will be the 63rd and runs from April 7th through the 11th.

There will be 5 days of fun filled entertainment to be enjoyed. The Opening Ceremonies will be held on Wednesday April 7th. The street fair begins Friday night April 9th at 6pm with entertainment and food vendors and as the skies grow dark the spectators arrive for the fabulous fireworks display.

Saturday morning you will find the streets lined with eager faces waiting for the start of the parade. The street fair kicks into high gear Saturday and runs through 6pm on Sunday. Come for 2 days of arts and crafts vendors, displays and exhibits and international food vendors. Don’t forget the numerous concerts scheduled Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Cole Brothers Circus will be back at the Wilmington Airport with shows beginning Thursday at 4:40pm. The circus is one of the highlights of the festival each year. Acrobats, clowns and other performers are sure to delight the circus fans young and old.

Another favorite of the Azalea Festival is the Garden Tour. Visit the many homes that participate in the tour and see the beautiful gardens in bloom.
